Having trouble staying connected to your Wi-Fi? Your neighbors may be your close friends. That doesn’t mean you have to share their Wi-Fi.
The PROBLEM is, mobile devices are not very good at detecting the signal strength and stability of multiple Wi-Fi networks competing for attention. This leads to annoying alerts, loss of Internet connectivity, and even makes mobile devices vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks. Some wireless carriers install their own Wi-Fi connection management apps that automatically scan for wireless networks and try to use them. Be sure to update or disable these settings in addition to those of stock Android apps. Many Android devices have a Connection Optimizer option under Settings > More > Mobile Networks. Disable this setting if it is activated.
The SOLUTION is, stop your Android from automatically connecting to other Wi-Fi networks (other than your own). Follow these steps below to do that.
STEP 1: STOP automatically connecting to other Wi-Fi networks
-
To delete a saved Wifi network from your phone or tablet, go to the Wifi section of your settings menu.
-
Find the network you want to get rid of. Long press it, then chose "Forget."
-
(There's also a "modify" option, which mostly is a nice way to change the Wifi password saved on your device.)
STEP 2: PREVENT your mobile device from automatically joining other networks
Occasionally your mobile device will automatically join a Wi-Fi network you don't want to be on.
-
Starting with Android 4.3 your device will continuously search for Wi-Fi networks, providing better location information, even if you have Wi-Fi turned off.
-
To disable Wi-Fi scanning always available on your Android device, launch the settings app and tap on the Wi-Fi option under wireless & networks.
-
Next, tap on the menu button in the lower-right-hand corner and select "Advanced" from the list.
-
You should then see "Scanning always available" with a checkbox next to it. Uncheck the box and your device will no longer scan for networks at all times.
-
Of course, if you change your mind, just come back to the same screen and check the box.
